Overview
American Express (Amex) is a supported card payment method available through Fergus Pay. This article explains how Amex works, how it differs from other card payments, and what fees apply.
Q - How does American Express work in Fergus?
When Amex is enabled:
The customer selects card payment
They enter their American Express card details
The payment is processed through Fergus Pay
Funds are paid out to you according to your standard payout schedule.
American Express payments appear in your Fergus Pay reporting alongside other card transactions.
Q - Is American Express different from Visa and Mastercard?
Yes. Although American Express is a card payment method, it has:
A different fee structure
A separate card network
Its own processing costs
For this reason, American Express may have different processing fees compared to standard credit and debit cards.
Q - What are the American Express processing fees?
Region | Processing Fee |
Australia | 3.75% + $0.30 |
New Zealand | 3.95% + $0.30 |
United Kingdom | 3.45% + £0.20 |
United States | No surcharge |
Q - Can I pass the American Express fee on to my customer?
In New Zealand and Australia, you can choose to either cover the Amex Fee or pass it on to the customer. In the United Kingdom, you cannot pass the fee to your customer, and you must cover the processing fee.
Q - How do I enable or disable American Express?
Amex availability is managed and can be enabled within your Fergus Pay settings, or from within the invoice.
If enabled, customers will be able to pay using their American Express card.
If disabled, customers will only see other supported card types and payment methods.
Q - Where do I receive funds from an American Express payment?
Once an Amex payment is successfully processed, funds are paid out according to your standard Fergus Pay payout schedule.
Q - Does enabling American Express affect existing invoices?
No. Changes to your Amex settings apply to future payment requests only. Existing invoices or previously issued payment links are not affected.
